The future of Social Media
What will replace it and when?
SISS, July 2020
The moment YouTube, Facebook and Twitter got ‘political’ the writing was on the wall. It stopped being what made it.
Social Media “it” became a political force and moved from being a social influencer to being a social director. That in essence made it a Government, or maybe more accurately, a dictatorship. It sounds harsh but if one clearly defines what each of these terms means, it is a relatively uncontentious leap. The only difference between “it” and a Government or a dictatorship in real terms, is that it is pervasive through stealth, and not overtly there to dictate what the public think. It has trickled through our bloodstream quietly and over a long enough period of time to infect the social consciousness, unchallenged. So, our proposition is based on this thought - over time Government’s, leaders, those in power or dictators… are eventually replaced. The objective therefore, is to precisely identify what or who it is that will replace them, when we decide to finally “unlike” them
What was the ‘draw’?
It was a drug like many others, however just like gambling, it became an addiction that became profitable for corporations, governments and individuals. In the case of gamblers for it is common to hear people say, “the only person who can make the decision to change is you”. In the case of social media, you are essentially told the same thing, but in this context, it is packaged as a “good” thing. You are in control of your social media output – it is not an addiction – it is what you want – it is beneficial – keep using it – the more you feel in control of that addiction – the more in reality we can control you. In many other aspects of life, that is simply called Politics! Wikipedia defines Politics as “the set of activities that are associated with making decisions in groups, or other forms of power relations between individuals, such as the distribution of resources or status.” These groups are now Facebook and Twitter groups and the decisions being made are entirely about resources and status and power.
The future will consist of a toppling of the current social media dictatorship in all forms. Just as we are now going through a “woke” phase, a post-enlightenment phase, a phase where any form of stereotypical oppression in not tolerated, so the same will happen with social media. In a (very few) months to come the fight will begin against the social media giants themselves. Take the current examples where YouTube and Facebook decide to ban all hate styled, hate associated authors. Who decided that? Why? Admittedly, it is not a new concept, that by social media giants censoring the masses they are becoming as influential as any government, but the fact it is happening now, so frequently, is a sign things are about to change. The next step, possibly, is a truly ‘social’, social media. In essence a democracy. A move from away from the oppressive government regime that is YouTube, Facebook et al, to a people led rebellion. Setting up something new. If history is anything to go by, that will happen. However, it too will be short lived. Look beyond that and then beyond that – 20 years from now which, given exponential technological growth is actually the equivalent of what 100 years was, only a decade ago. Now things really do get interesting!
